Millsaps in Action!

Thursday was the United Nations first ever International Day of the Girl Child.  With thousands of other committed women and men around the world, Millsaps College hosted an awareness day for the 77.6 million girls in the world who cannot go to school because of their gender. With the girl power of the Spice Girls and Florence+Machine playing in the background, our campus responded to this information by creating “Girls+Education” cards and by giving their resources to educate girls in the developing world.  Many students were painfully unaware of the status of girls in the world, but after being presented with this information, their response was encouraging.  Here is what happened:

We hung banners in the lobby of our cafeteria filled with facts about the oppression of women and girls. Then we pinned our "Girls+Education" cards detailing our solutions!

Rocking a JustUs t-shirt- all proceeds going to the education of girls in the developing world!

Over the last two weeks, Millsaps College students, faculty, and staff have already raised $863!  Our goal is at least $3000, 100% of which will go sending girls to school in the developing world.  Those who donated will vote on which organization and which school the money goes to!  Catapult.org– an innovative, exciting new database for grassroots funding- offers the list of programs we are choosing from!  Stay tuned for updates on the work of empowered students here in Jackson!
